Staying in Penglipuran Traditional Village

Tour Overview

“Living with Local People is the Best Way to Understand Authentic Culture.”

This Homestay Program is one of Baliedu Tours and Travel’s dedications to support and promote locally owned homestays that have limited marketing access. Through this program, we aim to help sustain local businesses and prevent them from losing their original function.

Desa Penglipuran is one of Bali’s traditional villages that has preserved its culture, customs, and community lifestyle for generations. The village is well known for its neat layout and cleanliness. The main temple is located in the northern part of the village, while 76 traditional houses with identical architecture line the southern area.

Each house compound consists of bale dangin, bale daja, bale dauh, a kitchen, and a family temple. One of the most distinctive features of Penglipuran is its bamboo roofs and uniform traditional gates (angkul-angkul). Uniquely, each house is connected by a small access door to the neighboring house, symbolizing harmony and close community relationships.

The village also maintains a preserved bamboo forest, which is used for ceremonial purposes. Staying in Penglipuran offers more than accommodation — it allows you to blend into village life and become part of a warm, culturally rich community experience.

Balinese Traditional Architecture – Live in Program

0 (0 reviews)

similarity: 0.292

Bali inherits a traditional architectural system known as Asta Kosala and Asta Bumi. According to Bhagawan Dwija, Asta Kosala refers to the rules governing the form and measurements of sacred structures (niyasa/pelinggih), including length, width, height, levels (pepalih), and ornamentation. Meanwhile, Asta Bumi regulates spatial planning, temple courtyard dimensions, zoning systems, and the distance between sacred structures. This architectural heritage has attracted researchers, students, and international visitors who wish to understand its philosophy and practical implementation. Balinese architecture cannot be separated from the social, cultural, and religious life of the community. Therefore, the best way to deeply understand it is by living directly within the village environment. This program takes place in Desa Penglipuran, a traditional village well known for its uniform spatial layout, sacred temples, social facilities, and preserved traditional house compounds. This live-in program is highly suitable for architecture students, anthropology students, urban planning scholars, and internship participants seeking authentic field study experience.

Balinese Traditional House & Ancient Village Experience

0 (0 reviews)

similarity: 0.289

This experience invites you to explore the philosophy behind traditional Balinese architecture, which is deeply rooted in spiritual and cosmological principles. Traditional Balinese houses are built based on the concepts of Tri Angga (the three parts of the human body) and Tri Loka (the three realms of existence), as well as the spatial orientation system known as Nawa Sanga. Each structure is positioned according to its sacred function, from the family shrine in the east, the kitchen in the south, to the well in the north, symbolizing balance and harmony in daily life. The journey continues to Batuan Village, where you will see authentic traditional houses preserved without modern alterations. Clay walls and thatched roofs offer a glimpse into Bali’s past and the simplicity of traditional living. You will also visit Penglipuran Village, renowned for its orderly layout and harmonious village planning based on the Asta Kosala Kosali philosophy. Each house compound follows a similar structure and equal land size, reflecting social balance within the community. The experience concludes with a visit to Bayung Gede Village, the ancestral village of Penglipuran residents, where ancient traditions are still practiced. Unique customs such as placenta burial rituals and traditional marriage regulations highlight the depth of Balinese cultural heritage. This journey offers meaningful insight into the philosophy, architecture, and social systems that shape traditional Balinese life.
