Pura Puncak Penulisan is located at the summit of Bukit Penulisan in Bangli Regency, approximately 1,745 meters above sea level. From the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of northern and southern Bali, accompanied by cool mountain air and a peaceful atmosphere. In the early morning, the journey offers beautiful views of three mountains aligned on the horizon: Gunung Batur, Gunung Abang, and Gunung Agung.
The temple is a prehistoric megalithic site believed to have existed since around 300 AD and continued to develop between the 10th and 14th centuries. Ancient statues and inscriptions discovered here highlight its importance in early Balinese civilization. The presence of large stones and sacred trees reflects the ancient highland belief system honoring Sang Hyang Tunggal and ancestral spirits.
For the Balinese community, the temple serves as a sacred place for melukat purification rituals guided by a local spiritual leader (Jro Bayan), using offerings such as pejati, incense, and young yellow coconut.
